Imperfect, weathered and quietly beautiful.
Wabi-Sabi
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese idea applied to a room: beauty in the imperfect, the handmade and the aged. Rough plaster, worn wood, uneven ceramics, natural linen and plenty of empty space. It is the calmest style there is, and the most forgiving of old things. It suits bedrooms and living rooms and anyone who wants a home that feels settled.

What makes it Wabi-Sabi
The five things to get right. Everything else is taste.
Wabi-Sabi color palettes- Palette Earth and stone, warm white, clay, charcoal and faded black, nothing bright.
- Materials Rough plaster, raw and weathered wood, unglazed ceramics, linen, stone, paper.
- Furniture Low, simple and solid, with visible age or hand-finishing; a stool as a side table, a bench.
- Textiles Crumpled linen, raw cotton, undyed wool, a worn rug.
- Lighting Soft and low, paper shades, candles, daylight through linen.

Try first
Cheapest first. Each is something you could do this weekend, or say to Room AI now.
- 1 Stop ironing the linen and let the bed look slept in; crumpled is the point.
- 2 Give one wall a rough limewash or plaster finish with visible movement.
- 3 Replace one perfect object with an imperfect handmade one: a wonky bowl, a cracked vase.
- 4 Clear space; one branch in a stoneware vase on an empty table is the whole idea.
What spoils it
The three things that turn Wabi-Sabi into something else.
- Shiny new finishes and perfect symmetry.
- Color and pattern.
- Clutter; wabi-sabi is sparse, not shabby.
